Ollama vs llama.cpp for Mac: Setup and Local Controls

Choose a runtime according to the controls your task needs. This comparison covers setup and local configuration. It does not establish which runtime uses less memory.

We checked the linked vendor sources on October 14, 2026. This post reports no comparative product test.

Ollama setup

The Ollama quickstart documents a macOS app and terminal access. It distinguishes local models from cloud models. Select a local model if the task requires local inference.

llama.cpp setup

The llama.cpp project provides command-line inference tools and a server. Its documentation covers GGUF model files and Apple silicon support. Check the model and runtime instructions before installation.

PocketLLM is pre-launch. Private, on-device AI, starting on iPhone, with more platforms planned. No account required, no in-app tracking, and chat processing stays on your device. Join the waitlist.

Disable Ollama cloud features

The Ollama FAQ documents OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 for local-only operation. Set this variable in the server environment. Restart Ollama after the change. Confirm the local model selection in the client.

Local inference keeps prompts on the device during inference when the selected model runs there. For a local-only workflow, select no cloud model. Disable chat sync and cloud backup. Check the app telemetry policy. Disable optional network features. Review extensions, exports, and local storage access.

Compare Ollama and llama.cpp memory or speed

  1. Record the Mac model, memory, operating system, and runtime versions.
  2. Use the same model file and quantization.
  3. Use the same context length, prompt, and output limit.
  4. Record the measurement method and output.
  5. Limit any conclusion to those test conditions.

llama.cpp on iPhone requires a separate deployment

The llama.cpp iOS sample provides a developer example. Mac setup does not install an iPhone app.
