"Is Ollama private?" and "is Ollama safe?" are two different questions, and the honest answer to both is "it depends on how you use it." Ollama can run language models entirely on your own machine — which is genuinely private — but it also has cloud features, an exposable local server, and it downloads model weights whose licenses and provenance vary. This guide answers the five questions people actually search for: is it private, is it safe, is it open source, is it free, and who owns it.
When you run a model locally with Ollama, Ollama says it does not collect, store, transmit, or access your prompts, responses, or local model interactions. Ollama's public code repository is MIT-licensed (the software, not the model weights), and the local tool is free. The caveats: Ollama may collect limited device/usage metadata, its cloud models and web search/fetch send data off-device by design, downloading models contacts Ollama's registry, the local API has no authentication (fine on localhost, risky if exposed), and model weights have their own separate licenses. It is provided by Ollama Inc., a privately held company — not an official Meta or Google product.
Is Ollama private?
For local models — the default and original use case — yes. Inference runs on your CPU/GPU; the prompt and the model's reply never leave the machine, and Ollama does not need an internet connection to answer once the model is downloaded. That is the architectural privacy guarantee that makes local LLMs attractive in the first place (see why private AI chat matters).
Ollama's privacy policy states that for local models it does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts, responses, or local model interactions. It does collect limited device and usage metadata — things like app version, request counts, diagnostic metadata, IP/browser/device info, and model-download metadata — explicitly excluding prompt/response content. So "runs locally" is not "collects literally nothing," but your conversation content stays on the device.
The privacy guarantee does not extend to: cloud models (offloaded to Ollama's cloud service — Ollama says cloud prompts/responses are processed transiently to fulfill the request, not stored beyond that or used for training, but they do leave your device), web search/fetch (queries and URLs are sent to ollama.com and require an account/API key), model downloads (pulling weights contacts Ollama's registry), and any third-party integrations. If you need strictly local behavior, avoid cloud models (e.g. OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 / disabling cloud features) and review the current privacy policy. Know which mode you are in.
Is Ollama safe?
"Safe" depends on four things you control, not on Ollama alone:
- Where the model came from. Ollama pulls weights from its registry and (optionally) other sources. A model file is code-adjacent data; only pull models you trust, the same way you would with any downloaded artifact.
- Network exposure. Ollama's API is served at
http://localhost:11434and binds127.0.0.1:11434by default, with no authentication on the local API. That's fine on localhost, but exposing it viaOLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0, Docker port publishing, a tunnel, or a reverse proxy lets anyone who can reach it use your models and hardware. Keep it on localhost unless you deliberately add auth in front. - Patching. Treat Ollama like any networked service — keep it updated so you pick up security fixes.
- What you feed it and what it can touch. The model itself can't exfiltrate data on its own, but tools and integrations you wire around it (agents, file access, shells) can. Treat those integrations with normal security hygiene.
- Cloud / web features. Cloud models and web search/fetch send data off-device — the "safe to paste anything" assumption no longer holds in those modes.
A local-only, patched Ollama setup can be appropriate for sensitive workflows if the API stays on localhost, models are trusted, and cloud/web/tool integrations are avoided or controlled. That is a configuration you maintain, not a blanket security guarantee — the risks here are configuration and supply-chain, not the local inference itself.
Is Ollama open source?
Yes. Ollama's public code repository is published on GitHub under the MIT license, one of the most permissive open-source licenses. That covers the Ollama software itself — not the model weights, and not necessarily every bundled third-party component. Each model you download carries its own separate license: Qwen3 is Apache-2.0, Phi-4 is MIT, Llama uses Meta's Llama community license, Gemma uses Google's Gemma terms — i.e. fully permissive through "open weights with restrictions." "Ollama is open source" is true; "every model in Ollama is open source" is not — check each model's license before commercial use.
Is Ollama free?
The local Ollama tool is free to download and use, and it is open source. Ollama also offers cloud access — including a Free plan and optional paid Pro/Max plans for more or larger cloud usage. You do not need a paid plan (or any cloud plan) to run models locally; local use stays free.
Who owns Ollama?
Ollama is provided by Ollama Inc., a privately held company. It is not an official Meta or Google product — a common misconception, because Ollama makes those companies' models easy to run. The code is community-contributable on GitHub under MIT, but the project and the ollama.com service/registry are run by the company.
